Elm Tree House was designed by Halsey Ricardo one of the three sets of original architects trying to win the ballot to design the layout of the new Garden City. His bid was unsuccessful, possibly because he ignored the palette favoured by the Garden City and used Arlesey White bricks of a type rarely used at Letchworth despite them being local to the area. Competitors were allowed to build two properties to their design, and this one was built by W.Seymour and Son of Queen Street, Hitchin in 1904/5. As well as the Arlesey local bricks, Richardo also used cavity walling for the first time in his design. The property was given Grade II listed status in September 1979.
